Vehicle tracking systems employ electronic devices installed in a vehicle to enable the owner or a third party to track the vehicle's location at any time. Most modern vehicle tracking systems use Global Positioning System (GPS) modules for accurate location of the vehicle. Many systems also combine a communications component such as cellular or satellite transmitters to communicate the vehicle's location to a remote user. Vehicle information can be viewed on electronic maps via the Internet or specialized software.

Port facilities take advantage of this technology and incorporate it in their port automation and IT services. Loading and Unloading activities will be synchronized with the predicted volume of traffic for cargo trucks, at the same time reducing incidence of double handling. Delays can also be minimized with the same information at hand, and alternative choices for container movement can be easily decided using these sets of information.

Having good communications throughout the facility coupled with relevant data on cargo and container movement keeps a port facility able to address problems caused by vehicle delays.  With accurate information, decisions and plans can be formulated before problems like congestion at the gate, or loading facilities, can even crop up and disrupt an otherwise smooth flow of traffic.
